Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI)

The Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) is a new index of economic performance being developed by a team of researchers at Massey University and Landcare Research (Simon Collins, New Zealoand Herald 8th oct. 2003). As well as the above link (click on headline) see GPI Online, an Australian base for GPI development.

The GPI takes into account environmental and social costs of economic activities, and may thus provide a far more rational basis for economic and political opinion making and decision making than the usual measure used to judge economic health, namely the GDP or Gross Domestic Product.
