Blackwell Synergy - has scientific journals online, with cross referencing system.

Directory of Open Access Journals This service covers free, full text, quality-controlled scientific and scholarly journals, and aims to cover all subjects and languages (from Lund University).

Find Articles - millions of articles from over 700 publications, including educational/reference sources (from Looksmart).

Ibiblio - the public's library and digital archive.

Ingenta a global research gateway with a free online search service for published content in reliable sources (actual copies of articles are not free here).

Institutional Archives Registry - supported by Eprints.org, a project dedicated to making refereed literature openly available online through self-archiving by research authors and institutions.

International Foundation for Science, in Stockholm, has established a system for supplying free access to otherwise not-free information sources online, for institutions in many countries.

International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications - Enabling worldwide access to information and knowledge.

Journal Seek is a free online data base of journals that can be found on the internet.

MIT Open Courseware - a free and open educational resource for faculty, students, and self-learners around the world.

National Academies Press - more than 3000 books online free (many research topics, many committee reports aimed at public policy development).

Online Books Page - has list of over 20,000 free books available online (from the University of Pennsylvania).

Phd Data Organization is aiming to provide information on PhD projects in progress around the world (founded c. 2004); this will depend mainly on data volunteered by PhD students.

Project Gutenberg - an international network of volunteers making books available for free.

Public Library of Science - is supported by scientists and physicians wishing to make the world's scientific and medical literature a freely available public resource.

Scientific Electronic Library Online - a model for cooperative electronic publishing of scientific journals on the Internet; especially conceived to meet the scientific communication needs of developing countries.

Science Direct, from Elsevier - journal articles and titles can be found here at no cost, but full access requires a payment.

Springer Link - online access to journals published by Springer and associated publishers, e.g. Kluwer; some of the journals that can be searched here do not allow full access to non-subscribers, even if you have a subscription for the Springer site.

Wikipedia - a free online encyclopedia and other resources (e.g. a media commons with copyright-free images) is offered by the Wikipedia Foundation and its volunteer contributors, translators, and editors.

AUDIBLE SCIENCE

For anyone with access to a computer that can receive and play back sound, it is possible to listen to sample-readings of scientific books and magazines online at Audible.com. The free samples are long enough to actually learn something. Use the key word search to find topics of interest. Does anyone know of services offering to read fully-academic and specialist research papers for people who cannot read the literature they want to follow? (PJM 16.1.04)
